Time Lapse of Calypso bulbosa Orchid (Fairy Slipper) Flower Development and Seed Setting

The flower has now been pollinated. The petals have served their purpose, and now will wither. Watch the inferior ovary (the “stem” under the flower) swell as it develops its seeds The ovary is packed full of the Orchid family’s nearly-microscopic seeds. Much later, the resulting seed pod will dry and open, allowing its seeds to spread.
