The “Ian Knot”, the world’s fastest shoelace knot – Professor Shoelace

G’day everyone, “Professor Shoelace” here, and after 21 takes of this video we’re just really going to “wing it” this time! I’m trying to do a video about the “Ian Knot”, the world’s fastest shoelace knot. So, here we go. Now first I’ll show it to you at normal speed so that you can see that it really *IS* the world’s fastest shoelace knot. Okay, you ready? It’s tied! Can’t get much faster than that can you? Now, Inge’s going to zoom in a bit here and we’ll … show it in slow motion. Now each end grabs a loop and one of them has the loose end in front and the other one has the loose end behind. And you’ll notice I just basically feed them through each other, through each other’s loops, and pull it tight. And at normal speed, it’s the world’s fastest shoelace knot. Now don’t confuse this with what we call the “Two Loop Knot”, which a lot of kids learn in Kindergarten. That’s where you create “bunny ears” and tie a knot with them. Okay. The “Ian Knot” also has two loops, but obviously it’s a lot quicker to just push them through each other than it is to do the whole “bunny ears” thing. So now, a few advantages of the “Ian Knot”. One is that it’s completely symmetrical. So unlike the normal “one-loop,” “rabbit-around-the-tree” type of knot, with that knot, one end is always getting more wear and tear than the other. And in fact that’s the end that’ll always end up breaking. Now with the “Ian Knot”, the wear and tear is spread symmetrically throughout the knot. In fact, I haven’t had a breakage for about 20 years since using this knot. The other advantage about being symmetrical is that, look, people are left or right handed so if you’re right-handed and you’re trying to do that or if you’re left-handed and you’re trying to do that, it’s a lot more complicated. With the “Ian Knot”, it doesn’t matter, left and right handed people can do it just as easily. So that’s terrific for, say a, right-handed parent trying to teach a left-handed child, which happens a lot. The third thing is that there’s fewer steps, so a normal knot where you do this and fold it over and then grab the other end and wrap it around and pull it there and feed that through and pull it tight. There’s a lot of steps there for a child to learn, and kids with learning / sequencing difficulties find that very difficult. With the “Ian Knot”, once you get the starting position correct, it’s just a single in … out movement. So that makes it easier for kids to learn. But, the funny thing is, that no matter which way you do it, whether you tie a standard, “bunny-round-the-tree” knot, or whether you tie … a “two-loop” knot, or whether you tie … the “Ian Knot”, now all three of those form the identical finished knot. So it doesn’t matter which way you tie it, you’ll end up with the identical knot and therefore it’ll be just as secure as whatever knot you’re using now. So, anyway that’s it, that’s the “Ian Knot”. Hope you enjoyed it, and if you want more detailed instructions and diagrams, go to “Ian’s Shoelace Site”: www.fieggen.com/shoelace

  • Why would anyone downvote this video?? It's awesome!

  • Holy shoelaces Bateman! I got it!!!! Only took me two tries. I didn't get it the first time because my laces were bent the same direction. I'm going to try and teach my toddler.

  • very easy to understand. Thank you very much

  • This knot is terrible. It just comes loose.

  • Amazing stuff, very easy to understand and do. The only thing I find is, you need to have nimble fingers to do it fast. My fingers are not so nimble, so it takes me about the same time to tie it as my normal knot. Very interesting though, to learn a new way of doing something you have been doing for your whole life.

  • Easy way to learn thank you

  • OK very cool and teaching my 7 year old this trick – Ill let you you know how it goes – thank you!

  • Who came here after Jungkook tied his shoe laces through this method? ?

  • ANY ARMIES HERE AFTER SEEING JUNGKOOK DO THIS LMFAO

  • Bring here video cuz jungkook bts hahaha

  • Jungkook brought me here

  • Here because of jungkook

  • i'm just doing it again and again and getting pissed at my self that i didn't knew this before.

  • 1:49 exactly what my father tried to do but well i at least learned.(yes im left handed..like if you are!)

  • I did not do the Ian knot but I know the magic

  • The first shoelace I ever tied! 😀
I can't even do the easiest ones. Found them too complicated. Can only do the Ian Knot. xDD
I've never been taught how to tie my shoelaces when I was younger. I'm so glad I found this video!

  • Are you God?

  • Where can I buy that shirt

  • This is so old but I GOTTA TRY THIS!!!

  • The best video!

  • OH MY GOD IAN FIEGGEN IS THE BEST. THIS IS INSANE. also I read like all of your websites and let me say: oh yeah that website for shoelaces is categorized and organized. Please don’t stop working hard!

  • Stop stop tying those other knots all of the time!!

  • Sorry, I got it now…

  • Now I know I have a knot named after me I'll have to learn to tie it.

  • This is brilliant…. Took me like 1 min to learn…

  • Interesting knot.
What about the initial wrap (before pushing the looses ends through the opposite loops)?
Can the initial wrap be either 'right over left' or 'left over right'?
Or must the initial wrap be one way? If so, how do you determine which way?

  • I’ve been doing this forever. I was never able to do the bunny round the tree or two loop knot. I’m glad to know it’s got a name

  • It may be fast, but I disagree that it's the best. I do that "wrap it around the tree type of knot," except that I wrap it twice and it stays all day. (Thanks Klutz Book of Knots!) But that's not symmetrical, right? I recently learned about the Beruti knot from a different video. It looks secure and symmetrical.

  • Hah ha ha…I enjoy it.

  • As a yacht rigger I've been through hundreds of knots and once spent a two-week vacation in a cabin when the rain wouldn't let up with a couple of Hanks of line and Ashley's book of knots but I've never seen this before. I'm very impressed and you did a great job with the tutorial there I'm going to follow the rest of your Channel one question – that's a pretty fly high top grey sneaker you got there … any brand name on it and where it could be found? Thank you

  • wow!! you deserve a Nobel prize for that! just keep on tying!. we can save so much time, like wiping our butts, 1 second less, or err,,,. sorry, I forgot

  • Too hard!

  • I prefer the hangmans triple deuce knot it grips the neck really well………?

  • I've tried this, and it's fast and easy. The problem with it is that it forces you to release your tension on the overhand knot, so your shoes might end up looser than you like.

  • Am i the only one who has been using this fast method for my whole life? : d

  • Witchcraft

  • The fastest shoelace knot is no knot. If you get the product called "Lock Laces", you lace up the shoe, like normal, but you install a locking device to hold the laces at their ends instead of tying knots. You can tighten or loosen the laces as much as you want by controlling the tension on the locking device just by sliding the laces through the locking device. The laces, themselves are made of a thin bungee cord material that have some built in stretch. They come in many colors to match or contrast your shoe colors.

  • I like the stretch plastic laces on ebay.

  • What is it with you and your fixation on shoe laces. Those things are antique and something new is desired. Hickies are made out of very cheap material and they break very easily. Lock laces are made of bungee cord material and did you ever try breaking a bungee cord? If one does not like the look of the locking device, you have the option of lacing it under the laces where it is. then, hardly noticed. If you want to be old fashioned, then please stay with laces and your Ian Knot. They will eventually go the way like the old pay phones and VCR players.

  • Never ever done it that way. I'm a convert. so much easier.

  • My knot is faster since I can actually do it.

  • I had no idea there were so many ways to tie your shoes!!!! Decisions, decisions. What's easiest, not fastest when you're dealing with an Autistic 12-year-old. My brother taught me how to tie my shoes.

  • He doesn't really show the "simple in an out movement." It's too quick.

  • Okay, that's it…there are too many fucking videos on YouTube!!!

  • we all NUT differently!

  • I like you, Prof. How best to tie a Red Wing 1907 boot lace so it'd look visually pleasing?

  • You showed us the 2 easy knots very slowly several times but I would like to see the Ian knot very, very slowly from the same angle I would see it as I attempt to tie it please? Otherwise I can’t do it, which is a shame as it looks efficient.

  • After all these years, I'm stunned by the thought of how many hours I've wasted by tying my laces the wrong way. I'm changing to slip-ons to try to recoup my losses.

  • Thank you

  • I've been doing this since I was 9, which I learned from a sport shoe saleswoman. However if you want something like leather laces to hang horizontally this doesn't work very well.

  • Slower and more angles of view please.

  • It took me 1.5 hours but i got it eventually in 3 sessions I might add….lol

  • If you have reached an age of 21 and still do not know how to tie your shoes, best buy shoes with velcro closures.

  • That's good, but mine is faster

  • every one in the US was taught the around the tree knot. You need to tie a square knot, makes the laces stay straight.

  • I can't do your stupid fucking knot!!!!!!!!!!!! damn it to hell!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I been doing it that way since I was a kid And They never Stay Tied…

  • Brilliantly simple. Simply brilliant!

  • But what about the show Colombo? He once was able to tell that a right handed victims shoes were tied by a lefty.

  • I haven't broken a shoelace in almost 20 years either, but my theory is that the quality of materials used in shoelaces has improved. On the other hand, the quality of shoes has dropped dramatically, and the days of replacing shoe laces are just about done. Great video, and a new knot to add to my repertoire, thanks!

  • I'd never thought people on earth would care about asymetrical wear and tear of a shoelace o.o

  • This is KNOT the way to tie your shoes.

  • Velcro

  • Finally at 63 I find out i've been tying my shoes with a "around the tree" knot like a kid. High time i started tying like an adult.

  • Wow this helps me I am bad at shoelaces

  • Coolest thing Iv learned today

  • So you mean to tell me you slept through the Guns Of Navarone?!

  • I do the two loop knot and I feel personally attacked

  • Thanks, going to try that on my scrubs belly cincher.

  • What is this black magic?

  • At the mental home they don't allow shoelaces.

  • I know how to tie Ian knot but I can’t do this

  • Who needs this when you can have velcro on your shoes?

  • This is an older video but may have been corrected, but you should show it from the perspective of someone tying shoes ie looking down at the shoes.

Edit: nevermind, I saw the new video with the flipped view. That video was extremely helpful!!! Thank you so much

  • I still don't know how to tie the tricky part.

  • You didn't invent this knot you fuck

  • I've been tying my laces like this ever since I first saw this video a few years ago. Thanks Professor Shoelace!

  • Ahh, the comment section of a youtube video on how to tie shoes. These are my people!

  • HMMMMM……………•_•

  • The best time optimisation investment I ever did was learn this knot.

  • I found your book when I was 13 years old (23 now). When I came across the Ian knot, I was dumbfounded that I had been taught this inept "bunny ears" crap all my life. Has helped me , and will continue to for the rest of my life. Thanks Ian. -Ian

  • Put the camera behind you.

  • This is fucking impossible

  • Mind officially blown at 1:46

  • The part where the knots are crossed is too quick. Can that be slowed down please.

  • Can you please explain step by step, I find this very hard to follow. Maybe it is obvious for you, but is less obvious for someone that sees it for the first time.

  • Just come across your videos and I can't believe I've been tying my shoe laces the wrong way most of my life! As they always come undone! I will be trying this from now on. Thank you ✨

  • Ian knot is the master race knot.

  • I cant do it :(((

  • the laws of physics work different for you i've been trying for the past 2 hours and i simply can't get it right it never turns into an actual knot :/

  • can you tie a knot with one hand

  • i'm 15 turning 16 and LEGIT don't know how to tie shoes 🙁

  • 43 yrs and counting: another thing added to the list of stuff I've done wrong.

  • The GOAT !

  • I watched this about 4 years ago, never went back.

  • And this is how my children will learn to tie their shoes

  • How did I get here?

  • Ok what do you mean just pull it through? Can you zoom in or slow down and show us what you’re actually doing

  • but sir, what should I do if the laces are short?

  • Nyc
