How to Waffle Lace your shoes – Professor Shoelace

G’day everyone, Ian Fieggen here, also known as “Professor Shoelace”. Today’s shoe lacing tutorial is of Waffle Lacing. Now this is a lacing that looks a bit like the sort of – – raised rectangular grid of a waffle. Or in fact – like the ‘waffle soles’ on some sneakers. Let’s look at that firstly on my Ian’s Shoelace Site. And – I’ll just animate the diagram for you. You can see that it runs diagonally up, straight down on the inside, diagonally, straight down, [repeat] diagonally, straight down. And at each eyelet the laces run twice through the eyelets there, forming a very dense finished waffle. Now let’s look at that on a real shoe. I’ve started with the lacing running straight across and out through the bottom eyelets. And I’ll begin by crossing the ends and feeding in through the eyelets two eyelets higher up. So we skip one eyelet and we feed in through the second eyelet higher up. Now we run down on the inside and out through the next lower eyelet. Again – down on the inside, out through the next lower eyelet. Now we once again cross the ends and – go up two and in through the first empty eyelets. Now here’s where it gets tricky because we go down on the inside and the eyelet that we’re going out through has already been used. But that’s okay. I recommend that you do this on a shoe that’s got large enough eyelets to accommodate two passes. Same here. Out through the already occupied eyelet. And once again we cross over on the outside. Feed in through the eyelet two higher up. Now feed down on the inside. Out through that already used eyelet. Down on the inside, out through THAT already used eyelet. And at the top of the shoe you can feed under the sides and out through the top eyelet. And that’s where you can tie your favorite knot – I’m using my “Ian Knot” – – the world’s fastest shoelace knot. And that’s it – that’s the finished “Waffle”. Sort of looks a bit like a waffle or a bit like a crossword puzzle – you know with the 3×3 words in a crossword puzzle. Anyway, that’s the finished Waffle Lacing – – hope you enjoyed it!
